Federal Inmate Release Records

A federal inmate release connected with Garza County belongs in the federal custody system, not the county jail or Texas prison search. No operating Bureau of Prisons institution is currently identified in Garza County. The relevant public tool is the nationwide BOP Inmate Locator, which can show a current institution or historical release information for people in its covered population. A BOP release result is limited to BOP custody. It does not by itself rule out supervised release, ICE detention, Texas custody, another county booking, or a federal pretrial matter handled by the U.S. Marshals Service.

What a Federal Inmate Release Means

BOP custody is one layer of a person's legal status. A locator result showing “Released,” a release date, or wording that the person is not in BOP custody can establish that the BOP no longer physically holds that person under the matched record. It does not establish that every form of custody or supervision has ended. The person may begin federal supervised release, transfer to ICE, enter state or local custody, or face another active matter.

Geography does not choose the search. A person arrested in Garza County on a local case belongs first in the Sheriff's jail record. A person serving a Texas sentence, including a current prisoner at Giles W. Dalby Unit, belongs in TDCJ records. Use BOP only when a federal conviction and BOP imprisonment are supported by the record. This system boundary prevents an old Dalby federal-contract reference from being mistaken for the unit's current TDCJ role.

Scope the result carefully. “Released from BOP custody” is not the same claim as “free from all custody and legal obligations.”

How to Check a Federal Inmate Release

The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A register number is the strongest search key because names can match and personal details can change.

  1. Choose the identifier route. Search by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when one is known.
  2. Use the name route if needed. Enter the name and narrow with age, race, and sex fields supplied by the official interface.
  3. Match the person. Compare the identifier and biographical details before treating a result as the subject.
  4. Read the status exactly. Record the displayed facility, release wording, and date without expanding the claim beyond BOP custody.
  5. Check the next system. When another agency or detainer is known, search that agency and reconcile dates.

A current facility result means the person remains in BOP custody as reported. A historical release result is evidence of a BOP event, not a county-jail release entry. If the question concerns the legal basis, sentence, or supervised-release term, consult the federal criminal docket and court records. If it concerns where the person was physically held before designation, the U.S. Marshals Service may have been the custodian.

BOP Records and Contact Route

Because there is no verified operating BOP prison in Garza County, this page does not invent a local street address, phone, or records desk. Start with the national BOP locator and the contact information tied to the institution or record returned by the official system.

For a fuller historical record, frame the request around the person, register number, institution, date range, actual release date, transfer destination, and document type. Do not ask a Garza County office to create a federal release record it does not hold. If the person was never designated to BOP, a locator failure may simply show that the wrong federal custodian was searched.

Federal Release Result Fields

The locator is concise. Each field must be read within the limits of the BOP system rather than treated as a complete biography or nationwide custody clearance.

FieldHow to use it
Register numberMatch the federal BOP record and reduce same-name error.
Name and descriptorsConfirm identity before relying on status information.
Current institutionShows the reported BOP facility when the person remains in BOP custody.
Release dateShows the historical or expected BOP date presented by the locator.
Released or not-in-custody wordingLimits the finding to physical BOP custody under that record.

Record the access date because status can change. A projected or future value should not be restated as an executed release. A locator result also does not explain the court's sentence calculation, a detainer, or the terms of federal supervision. Use the sentencing court and agency records for those questions.

Federal Release Versus Garza Custody

A Garza County Jail record can show that a person left local custody for USMS or another federal receiver. That entry proves a transfer, not BOP release. Continue with the receiving agency and the federal court case. A later BOP designation may appear after processing, but an immediate BOP match is not guaranteed.

Current Dalby prisoners are different again. Although Dalby has former federal-contract history, TDCJ purchased the property and began operating it as a state prison in 2026. Current Dalby names belong in the TDCJ offender search. Only a historically supported federal confinement period belongs in BOP or USMS records. The date and contracting custodian decide the route, not the building name alone.

The Garza County release-record guide covers the local jail and court path. Use it when a Garza booking preceded federal pickup, then preserve both records: the local transfer event and the later federal status. Neither record should be made to answer for the other.

U.S. Marshals Custody Is Not BOP Custody

USMS commonly handles federal pretrial detainees, transportation, and prisoners housed under contracts. It does not provide a broad historical public inmate locator comparable to BOP. A person in federal proceedings can therefore be absent from the BOP locator while still held through the Marshals Service.

For a USMS matter, use the federal criminal docket, the court, counsel, and the appropriate district contact. Look for a detention or release order, designation, judgment, and custody-transfer information. A court order can show legal authority, but execution may require a custodian record. As in the county system, distinguish the signed order from the time custody actually changed.

Once a sentenced person is designated to BOP, the register number and BOP locator normally become the more useful public route. Before that point, do not convert “no BOP result” into “released.” The record may be delayed, outside BOP scope, misspelled, or associated with a different identifier.

Detainers After Federal Release

A release from one system can activate another agency's hold. ICE may assume custody after BOP, a Texas warrant may lead to state or county transfer, or another jurisdiction may receive the person. The BOP record may truthfully show release even while the person remains confined elsewhere.

When a destination is known, confirm the handoff through both systems. Compare the BOP release date with the receiving agency's intake date and retain the exact status labels. ICE's public locator is mainly a current-detention tool and can omit or delay records, so a no-match is not affirmative release evidence. The county sheriff should likewise be asked for the release code and receiver, not merely whether the person is present.

Federal supervised release is also distinct from detention. Its conditions and duration come from the judgment and federal probation system. A BOP locator does not provide a universal answer about those obligations. Use the court record for the sentence and the responsible official office for current supervision information that is lawfully available.

Historical Dalby Federal Records

Dalby's recent conversion creates a local record trap worth stating plainly. The private contract ended in September 2024, the facility was vacant during the county's 2025 solicitation, and TDCJ began populating the acquired property in January 2026. An old search result may still describe federal or private operation even though the current official directory identifies a TDCJ unit.

For confinement before the state conversion, state the exact dates and determine which agency contracted for the bed and which operator created the document. BOP may hold records for a sentenced federal inmate. USMS may be relevant to pretrial or transport custody. A former contractor may have created operational records subject to the contract's custody provisions. Current TDCJ staff should not be assumed to hold all of them.

This date-based approach avoids two errors: sending a current TDCJ prisoner to the federal locator and sending an old federal-contract record only to TDCJ. Use the current agency for current custody, the historical custodian for the historical event, and the federal court for the judicial record.
