The current official directory identifies Dalby as a male TDCJ prison with a capacity of 1,906. Its G1 through G2, G4, and transient classifications reinforce that a unit departure can be movement within the prison system. The unit is not the Garza County Jail and does not use the county jail's booking-release request path.
Dalby also opened with transition-focused programming, including a six-month initiative based on the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative for parole-voted participants and a four-month corrective intervention pre-release program. Dalby's Recent Custody-System Conversion
Dalby underwent an unusual change that makes record dates essential. The prior private operator's contract ended in September 2024. The facility was vacant during Garza County's 2025 operator solicitation. TDCJ later acquired the property, began populating it in January 2026, and announced the state unit's opening on February 24, 2026.
The current TDCJ directory controls for people now housed there. A stale page that sends every Dalby search to BOP or a former private operator is wrong for current custody. Yet TDCJ ownership does not automatically make TDCJ the custodian of all records from the private or federal-contract era. For a historical inquiry, state the exact confinement dates and identify the operator and contracting agency that held the record then.
For pre-September 2024 federal-contract history, BOP or U.S. Marshals records may be relevant. BOP's locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward, while USMS has no comparable general public historical locator. A federal court docket, counsel, the court, or the relevant district contact may be needed. The current unit phone cannot settle every older custodial question.
Release Logistics for Dalby Prisoners
TDCJ states that prison releases ordinarily occur from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, while cautioning that schedules can change. Family may arrange pickup at the release facility but should call before travel. When family pickup is not used, TDCJ describes a bus voucher to the station nearest the approved residence. A parole or mandatory-supervision releasee receives a certificate explaining conditions, civilian clothing, and the trust-fund balance. TDCJ describes gate-money amounts by legal category, not as a flat benefit for everyone. Eligible parole or mandatory-supervision releasees may receive a $50 gate check and another $50 after reporting, while a flat-discharge prisoner is described as receiving $100. State-jail prisoners do not receive gate money under Government Code section 501.015(b). Verify the category rather than promising a sum.
TDCJ also reports that eligible prisoners may have identity records ordered for delivery at release, including a Social Security card, birth certificate, state identification or replacement license, and DD-214. That is a program description, not proof that a named person has every document. For a county release rather than a state-prison event, use the Garza County Jail release-record route.
